Caring For Your Extensions
Here are a few hints and tips to get the most out of your extensions – if you have any more that you would like to add, then send us an email or contact us on twitter.
- Before installing your extensions wash your hair but don’t use conditioner – some conditioners leave a silky coating on the hair which means that liquid gold and Protac don’t bond properly with the hair.
- Stay away from products containing citric acid eg, Fructis as this can break down shrinkies and bonds.
- Brushing causes pulling on the extensions which can loosen them – always hold your hair and brush the lengths first then top.
- Washing can damage your hair; never wash extensions with your head upside down over the bath as the weight of the water will drag extensions.
- Extensions are most likely to be damaged or broken when they are wet so take care.
- When you have washed your extensions, wrap them carefully in a towel and allow them to dry then finish the drying process off with a hair dryer, on a cool setting.
- Extensions only need to be washed twice a week, try dry shampoo or just washing the top of your hair that has no extensions in.
- Don’t get conditioner on the extensions bonds as they cause them to slip and disintegrate
- Before washing, carefully brush and tangles out of the extensions
- Don’t wash extensions for at least 24 hours after installing them
- Heat is the enemy – keep hair dryer and straightners away from bonds.
- Use serum on extensions to keep them in good condition and always use heat protector spray.
- Stay away from products containing silicon or gloss as these coat the hair and make extensions slip out. Usually anything that promotes great shine is damaging. (personally I find Herbal Essences to be best with extensions).
- Don’t pick at bonds or glue as it will loosen the extensions.
- You naturally lose up to 100 hairs a day through brushing and washing, so when the hair is trapped in extensions this hair has no where to go. When you remove extensions, and wash your hair for the first time, all this hair is released, this is natural, don’t panic, your hair is not falling out.
- Do everything you can to protect the bonds, this is ultimately the best way to keep your extensions for longer.
